The tissue engineering group (CTS-115) is a research group of the Department of Histology of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Granada focused on the development of human artificial tissues for the treatment of different diseases and the progressive replacement, in some cases, of experimental animals.

The research group has been a pioneer in tissue engineering and has generated in the last ten years a solid body of knowledge related to the construction of artificial tissues by tissue engineering, and has generated a significant number of publications in journals of scientific impact in their field. Likewise, the group has generated several patents related to advanced therapies at the University of Granada and the Andalusian Public Health Service, with some of them, transferred to the industry. The group has succeeded in transferring several human artificial tissues to the clinic in the Public Health System of Andalusia, providing innovative therapies that are in clinical trials or implemented as compassionate use.

The CTS-115 keeps a leadership research activity in health sciences related to human tissues, and is recognized as a reference in tissue engineering, including the generation of novel artificial tissues, and the characterization of these products in terms of cell viability and quality controls for clinical use. The group has organized several national and European meetings, including the only congress of the International Society of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine (TERMIS) that has been held in Spain (Granada, 2011) or the congress of the Spanish Society of Histology and Tissue Engineering in 2022.

The most relevant achievents of the group include:

01 The first complete artificial cornea generated in the laboratory, along with a multilayer biomimetic human cornea called NANOULCOR, containing several cell types and nanotechnological biomaterials designed by the group, which meets all the necessary quality controls for clinical use

02 The first multilayered human bioartificial cornea (NANOULCOR) grafted in patients with corneal blindness, in the context of a pioneering advanced therapies clinical trial, in collaboration with the Ophthalmology Services of the San Cecilio and Virgen de las Nieves University Hospitals of Granada and the Andalusian Network for the design and translation of Advanced Therapies (And&tAT) of the Regional Ministry of Health of the Government of Andalusia, as well as the Ophthalmology Services of several other Andalusian hospitals

03 Generation of a biomimetic model of human artificial skin (UGRSKIN), the first generated in the Spanish Public Health System that has been authorized for clinical use by the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products, which has shown clinical usefulness in severely burnt patients, with an increase in the survival rate and quality of life of these patients

04 Development of a novel model of human oral mucosa (BIOCLEFT) that has already obtained approval from the Spanish Medicines Agency for its application in children with cleft palate, in a pioneering advanced therapies clinical trial that will evaluate, for the first time in Europe, an artificial tissue implanted in children with congenital malformations

05 Generation of biomimetic models of human artificial cornea, skin and oral mucosa using alternative cells sources obtained from the umbilical cord and other sources of mesenchymal stem cells, which will allow the immediate availability of artificial tissues stored in tissue banks

06 Generation of novel models of other human tissues and organs, including, among others, the peripheral nerve, cartilage, bone, urinary bladder and tendon, which have shown preclinical potential and are in the process of clinical transference

The tissue engineering group keeps active collaboration activities with the Andalusian Network for the design and translation of Advanced Therapies (And&tAT)), who is responsible for the clinical translation of artificial tissues in the Andalusian Public Health System
